Networking Do’s and Don’ts

Here are some things to consider in making networking pay off:

Organize and file the contacts you make for easy reference.

Keep not just your business cards, but your resume handy at all times – You never know where your next opportunity may come from; someone may want to step away from the crowd and talk business. At the very least, keep a copy of your resume in the car, so you can get it and hand it out.

Join a professional organization related to your field or the one to which you aspire.

Conduct informational interviews with those already working where you want to be to learn more about a field.

Get a mentor and actually stay in regular contact with him or her.

Send brief thank-you notes to your contacts telling them how much you enjoyed meeting them, noting something specific that you discussed and that you look forward to seeing them again. Make sure you include your contact info – again – because business cards can get lost.

Pack properly for business trips. Make sure the outfits you bring fit the occasion. Pay attention to invitations for receptions or events that specify a dress code.

Update contacts. If you’re attending an annual conference, update your contacts. Sometimes an old contact has moved to an area in which you have a strong interest and can provide some assistance.  Add new contacts of people you meet while traveling and attending conferences. The person seated next to you on the plane may have something in common with you. Build your networking list for more future opportunities for your business and for you.
